The statements are based on laborious researches in government and church records, extensive inquiries among relatives, associates and contemporaries, and a careful study of the considerable Rizal literature, but acknowledgment of these obligations must be deferred till the publication of the larger work. Here it is possible only to express gratitude for the enthusiastic interest shown by the Filipinos and appreciation of the courtesy of the Spaniards, uniformly experienced during the five years in which this study has been in progress.
